BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has gone another step further to make 20-20 matches more popular amongst the cricket lovers across the world. They crafted the IPL very much similar to football’s very own English Premier League and National Baseball League in America. IPL is Twenty20 professional cricket league that is supported by BCCI and has a backing of ICC (International Cricket Council).
This cricket extravaganza started on April 18th, 2008 with eight of teams competing against each other. Every team has a total of sixteen players and there will be a total of fifty nine matches. The working of IPL is based on a franchise system which is very much similar to how things are conduced in America. The franchises were publicly auctioned and whosoever bids the highest gets the right to own the team which will be representing a particular city.
It was on January 24, 2008 that the auction took place and the total price of the auction reached up to four hundred million dollars. The most costly franchise was of Mumbai franchise which is owned by Mr. Ambani of RIL (Reliance Industries Limited) for more than hundred million dollars. And following that was the owner of United Beverages Mr. Vijay who paid $109 million for Bangalore franchise.
Hyderabad team was owned by Deccan Chronicle which is a media house for over hundred million dollars Indian Cements bought the team of Chennai for ninety million dollars. Bollywood also made their effective contribution to IPL where Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla of Red Chillies Entertainment bought Kolkota’s team and not far behind Miss. Zinta bought the team of Mohali for $75 million.
One of the leading infrastructure development group GMR those are behind refurbishing Delhi airport bought the team of Delhi for 83 million dollars. Mr. Manoj who is Chief Executive Officer and Mr. Lachlan purchased Jaipur franchise for more than sixty million dollars. Let us get to know more about the teams playing in IPL-
Rajasthan Royals- The team of Jaipur is owned by Emerging Media which is a company of England. Team’s coach and captain is famous former spin bowler Mr. Warne.
Bangalore Royal Challengers- The team for Bangalore is owned by Mr. Vijay who owns the United Beverages group. The team is captained by Mr. Dravid who is known as ‘The Wall’ in Indian cricket team and the team has Mr. Venkatesh as their bowling coach.
Kings XI Punjab- Miss. Preity Zinta who is a famous Bollywood actress and her partner Mr. Wadia and his friends bought the team. Mr. Yuvraj who comes from Chandigarh is the captain of Kings XI Punjab and former bowler of Australia Mr. Moody is the coach of the team.
Chennai Super Kings- India cements is the owner of the team and Mr. Dhoni is leading the team. Mr. Wessels who was the former captain for South African cricket team is the coach for Chennai Super Kings.
Kolkota Knight Riders- Mr. Shahrukh and Mrs. Juhi are behind Kolkota Knight Riders. Mr. Ganguly is the captain of the team and Mr. Buchanan is the team’s coach.
Deccan Chargers- The team of Hyderabad was bought Deccan Chronicle. Mr. Laxman is the captain and Robin Singh is the coach of the team.
Mumbai Indians- Mr. Mukesh of Reliance Industries is the owner of Mumbai Indians. The team has India’s favorite player Mr. Sachin but unfortunately he is not fit for the matches so Mr. Harbhajan has taken over the captaincy and Mr. Lalchand is the coach of the team.
Delhi Daredevils- GMR Holdings is the owner of Delhi Daredevils with Mr. Sehwag as the captain of the team and Mr. Greg as the coach of the team.
